United
Regional Health Care System (URHCS)
offers bariatric patients superior facilities
and excellent care. Built in 2003, the
dedicated Bariatric Unit has private rooms
fully equipped to accommodate the needs
of the overweight patient, including bariatric
friendly bathrooms and extra wide beds
and wheel chairs. Our highly skilled and
compassionate nursing staff have specialized
bariatric training and understand the
many clinical needs of the bariatric patient.
Registered dieticians provide nutritional
and dietary support, a key to long-term
success. Gastric bypass surgery is a tool
that imposes and requires major changes
in eating habits and behavior. Our dieticians
have formulated step-by-step nutritional
guidelines and counsel patients both before
and after surgery. Learning new eating
habits and following the nutritional guidelines
will help patients achieve and maintain
desired weight loss. The hospital has
full critical care services in house and
highly trained physicians from numerous
specialties to address various needs of
our bariatric patients.

Psychological counseling and psychiatric
care is provided to our patients through
Taft Counseling Center. Mr. Walter Swinhoe,
executive director, is a Licensed Marriage
and Family Therapist and an accredited
Pastoral Counselor at the Fellow level.
Dr. Emory Sobiesk, MD, is a psychiatrist.
They offer individual, family, and group
therapy to help our patients obtain the
greatest potential benefit from having
gastric bypass surgery. Since a person's
state of health is a delicate balance
of several factors-physical, emotional,
spiritual and relational-the counselor
attempts to understand each person from
a holistic perspective.

| Experts agree that
psychological support and counseling
can prepare gastric bypass patients
for potential pitfalls and teach them
effective coping skills. Since unresolved
behavioral patterns can cause patients
to lose motivation and veer from a
new healthy lifestyle, therapy can
be an essential tool in preserving
patient commitment and overcoming
eating compulsions or disorders. The
full benefit of surgery is realized
as patients are totally committed
and recommitted to a new and healthy
lifestyle. Ongoing psychological reinforcement
after surgery leads to long-term success. |

| Patient preferences and medical
insurance requirements may determine
which facility will best meet individual
needs. Exercise is key to obtaining
the best results after surgery. These
facilities are economical and easily
accessible. Within weeks, patients
can reach a desirable level of exercise
tolerance, be prepared to return to
work, and gain confidence to carry
on in a less structured fitness setting
close to home. Similar arrangements
can be made for patients outside the
Wichita Falls area. | |
